Starting a Soft Serve Business in Australia: The Equipment Checklist

By Soft Serve Support — Team · 03/08/2026 · 1 min read

Everything you need to start serving — from the machine and mix to power, compliance and the extras people forget.

In short: to start serving soft serve you need the right machine for your volume, suitable power, a reliable mix supply, cones/cups and toppings, and your electrical and refrigeration compliance sorted. Here's the full checklist.

1. The machine

Match it to your busiest hour and menu — gravity or pump feed, single or twin flavour (with twist), countertop or floor-standing. When in doubt, size up a little.

2. Power

Check your site before you buy. Bigger machines often need three-phase power — retrofitting it later is expensive. This is the most common thing new operators miss.

3. Mix supply

Decide on liquid or powder mix and line up a reliable supplier. Mix is your biggest ongoing cost, so overrun (how much air the machine whips in) directly affects your margin.

4. Serving gear

Cones, cups, spoons, toppings, a topping station and a way to hold stock at temperature.

5. Compliance

  • Electrical test & tag for your equipment
  • Refrigeration servicing by an ARC-licensed technician
  • Food-safety requirements for your council

6. A service plan

Line up who services and supplies parts for your machine before you need them — not mid-breakdown.

Frequently asked questions

What equipment do I need to start a soft serve business?
A commercial soft serve machine sized to your volume, suitable (often three-phase) power, a mix supplier, serving gear and toppings, and electrical/refrigeration compliance.
Does a soft serve machine need three-phase power?
Many larger commercial machines do. Always check your site's power supply before buying, as adding three-phase later is costly.
